That ought to generate some lively discussion. Can you explain again how your code resists ballot stuffing?

Your excellent work is perls before swine. I will probably start the next purge at the end of the week with some of the "worst offenders." Sadly, the more "favorited" banners can't be improved any more than to "Show All."

When a vote is cast, the user's IP address, the banner ID, and the current date/time are stored in a voters table*. Each time you attempt to cast a vote, this table is checked and if the IP/banner ID combination is present, the vote is dropped and you get an error message saying you've already voted**. To keep the voter table from becoming too large, records older than 48 hours are purged. There is no difference in the way guests and registered members are treated.
So it is technically possible to stuff the ballot box; you either have to wait 48 hours between votes or change IP addresses to do so. This was somewhat intentional, so that if you later had a change of heart about a particular banner you could vote the opposite way on it, or if you really thought a particular one was great you could vote for it multiple times (albeit with a two-day wait each time).
The behavior can be altered, if there's a good reason to do so. Changing the length of the waiting period is simple; other changes could range from moderately easy to impossible, depending on what they are.
*This table doesn't store whether the vote was for or against; the "pro" or "con" column in the banner table is incremented to record that information.
**Actually, normally you will never see this error message, since the header code also checks the table and disables the vote buttons if it detects you've already voted on that banner.

I haven't noticed this 48-hr job take hold as yet. Not that I WANT to vote multiple times--and would really appreciate it if everybody didn't try to inflate vote counts this way--but it's probably unwise to tell people (including unregistered guests) that they can have some effect on the outcomes in this manner. We don't want that table swelling beyond all reason either, but when it comes to deleting the next set, I won't likely be axing those with under X votes (say, ten or more) and fewer than Y net difference (probably 4-6 or more).
On the flipside, the more I delete (or "undisplay," if I'm really convinced some banner took work to make or might wanna stick around 'til a later time), the more of them I'm likely to release back into circulation and/or bump up to Both View (barring the real obvious eyebleach). Which is to say, with the advent of this voting feature, the balance of banners might as well be in circulation for people to vote on them.

OK, based on the current number of entries in the table, it seemed like this could be extended. To maintain the air of mystery I won't reveal here what the expiration time is now, but it is longer. I don't want to make this too long, or we'll start to run into the dynamic IP problem. That is, someone like me on dialup votes, then the next poor shmuck who gets the same IP address tomorrow is prevented from voting. Yeah, I realize this isn't a big problem with DSL and cable users having near-static IPs and the small number of people who actually visit the site, but I would rather have a few bogus votes slip through than block legitimate ones.

HOW TO VOTE!
1. Hover your cursor over the banner at the top of the page. Anywhere above the navigation bar ("Home, High-Street Forum, User List...") is fine.
2. A small pair of Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down icons will appear on the right hand side of the banner area. These will display current vote totals on each.
3. Click once on the Thumb that reflects your opinion of the banner shown (not "banners in general, life, HS, or your generally dim view of the world").
4. Your vote will be counted and you will be returned to the page you were on. It would be unwise to do this on a page where you are entering text.
5. Continue voting or stop there. The more negative votes a banner gets, the more likely it is to be removed by the end of the week (still not a guarantee*).
* Eventually, a critical point will be reached where banner voting activity may exceed the number of banners being produced in a week. I will keep bringing older banners out of storage for a while, so that they may be voted on, but I reserve the right not to be too heavy handed with the purge as we would--given this particular audience--end up looking at the same dozen banners all day.

Thanks for the write-up, Pale; note that if you have Javascript disabled, you probably won't see the thumbs-up and thumbs-down buttons.

You might expect a certain negativity from this crowd, but at the moment happy thoughts are winning out: there have been a total of 927 "for" votes cast versus 539 "against."

I have a question for the voters in the crowd: I'm amused by the reactions the various banners I've done have received. Some that I was sure were popular are evidently not, and others I don't actually like myself even though I designed them are popular.
One I'm particularly curious about is the guy who who's had his face tattooed to resemble a cat. I'm not offended by its lack of popularity - I'm just curious as to what it is about it that people dislike.
Any takers?

Alas, no. The first time I ever saw him was in a city council meeting; I was listening to the proceedings when this good looking guy came in, sat near me and kept me completely distracted through the rest of the meeting. Later, I asked a friend who he was. "Oh, him? That's Sarah's husband."

That's probably because people would sooner not vote than to be responsible for a banner's removal. Be responsible, people!

Oh, hey, can we get, like, a couple pixel wide border on the appropriate vote button to indicate which way we have already voted, if already voted we have?
So, saying I've voted up on the pierced-catman banner, when it pops up and you mouseover it, you see the thumbs up/down button, but the up one has, like, a couple pixels worth of brightly colored (blue?) border to indicate that that's how I fucking voted?
Say, for example, that a banner appears. And I vote on it. In the act of voting, say that High Street notices that I have voted on it, and on future displays of that banner, the button indicating the direction of my vote is highlighted in some manner.
I think what I am trying to get at is the buttons, on the banner, should perhaps indicate the vote a person has already registed, assuming this has happened 'cause you're not some kind of unvoting hippie.
...
So.
The banner.
I think what I am saying, if I am not mistaken about such things,
I have now gotten bored with this halfass drunktroll. Fuck yourselves.

Once you have voted on a banner, when the same banner comes up again the buttons will be disabled, and the tooltip that appears when you hover over a button will make this clear.
The way you voted isn't tied to you in the database, so if you're too drunk to remember whether you loved or hated a banner there's not much I can do to help you.
